Voice of the People Protected

Writer: SLCounty DemsSLCounty Dems

(Salt Lake County, UT) - Salt Lake County Party Chair Jade Velazquez issued the following statement today about the Third Judicial District Court's Ruling to Void Constitutional Amendment D.

"Today the Third Judicial District Judicial Court protected the ability of Utahns to reform our state government and make their voices heard. By recognizing that the ballot summary of Constitutional Amendment D was an inaccurate summary and deceptive attempt by the Republican Legislative Supermajority to trick the people into giving up their power.

While today is a victory for all Utahns, we must be aware of what the legislative supermajority attempted to put on the ballot this year. This power-hungry attempt to silence Utahns' voices comes because they are mad that Utahns voted for non-partisan, independent redistricting and that the Utah Supreme Court protected the right of Utah voters to reform our government. We must be prepared for more attempts by the Republicans in our legislature to expand their power at the expense of Utahns' freedoms. The only way to stop future attacks on our freedoms is to vote out the Republican supermajority and vote in representatives who will respect Utah's voices like the many Democrats running up and down the ballot this November.

The people won this round, but the real fight is on Nov 5th.”
